Your itinerary
Day 1: UK - Azores.
Fly to Ponta Delgada airport on São Miguel island, where you will be met by your representative and transferred to Povoação for three nights. One of the oldest settlements on the Azores, the coastal town of Povoação has a fascinating heritage, stunning natural beauty and makes an excellent base for exploring the east of the island.
(D)
Day 2: Nordeste.
Enjoy a tour of the Azores' wonderful belvederes, lush green vegetation contrasting with the blue sea, stopping first at Ribeira dos Caldeirões with its rustic water-mills, waterfalls and a small lake. Continue to the peaceful Sossego Belvedere and Ponta da Madrugada Belvedere before reaching the alluring small town of Nordeste, the highest point on San Miguel island, surrounded by a mountainous landscape and blanketed by deep forests. After lunch at a local restaurant, we journey on to Salga and then to Gorreana for a fascinating tour of its tea factory and plantations. Later, travel back to Povoação, taking in the dazzling white houses of Furnas and beautiful views from the Pico do Ferro belvedere en-route.

(D)
Day 3: Whale and dolphin spotting cruise.
Following a morning at leisure to relax and enjoy the delights of Povoação, this afternoon is sure to provide a highlight of your holiday as we head out by boat for an unforgettable quest to spot the 25 species of majestic whales and playful dolphins that swim in these waters. The icy cold Atlantic seas around the Azores are considered one of Europe's - and perhaps the world's - prime spots for whale and dolphin watching. Cruising along the south coast of São Miguel and guided by lookouts stationed back on the island, your observations will be aided by insights from an on-board biologist who will explain what to look out for and introduce you to the species you're most likely to see.
Note: In cases such as adverse weather conditions the day of this excursion is subject to change.

Day 4: Furnas Valley - Logoa de Fogo - Ponta Delgada.
Today, leave Povoação for Ponta Delgada, the Azorean capital, driving through the lush, flower-filled Furnas Valley on the way. This tranquil area is one of the richest hydrological areas in Europe, boasting 22 hot springs. This morning, you'll experience the Botanical Park of Terra Nostra, an exquisite garden of lakes, bridges and luxuriant flora, before heading to Lake Furnas, situated in the crater of an extinct volcano, for an authentic local lunch of 'Cozido das Furnas' - a hearty dish of meat, sausages and vegetables cooked underground by the heat of the volcano. Next, head to nearby Lagoa do Fogo (Fire Lake), set in an extinct volcano crater and filled with pearlescent, transparent waters, to enjoy the magnificent views over the lake from its lookout point before descending to Ribeira Grande on the north coast for a fascinating glimpse into the production of the famous Azores liqueur at Eduardo Ferreira's factory. Continue on to Ponta Delgada for a four-night stay.
(B)
Day 5: Ponta Delgada. Included sightseeing.
A whole day in Ponta Delgada with a morning's sightseeing tour to help you get acquainted with this beautiful town. The heart of the Azores, Ponta Delgada is home to the islands' political, cultural and religious centres, all housed in magnificent Portuguese buildings. Your tour takes in many of the capital's landmarks, including its ornate 16th century Church of São Sebastião and colourful flower, food and craft market. This afternoon, time free to immerse yourself further in the relaxed atmosphere and cobbled streets of this charming town.
(B)
Day 6: Ponta Delgada. At leisure.
A day at leisure to further explore Ponta Delgada at your own pace. Alternatively you may prefer to get out and about to enjoy the stunning local countryside or choose from one of our optional jeep safari tours and see the area from a different perspective.

Day 7: Sete Cidades.
This morning, journey to Sete Cidades, a rural village set in a spectacular volcanic crater alongside two beautiful lakes, said to have been formed by the tears of two separating lovers. En-route, after admiring the awesome panorama from the Vista do Rei belvedere, enjoy a stop on the banks of one of the lakes to admire the impressive views. Later, cross the island's central mountain range, passing the old village of Bretanha, and stop for lunch: consiting of a choice of delicious regional specialities. Before returning to your hotel, enjoy a visit to a local pineapple plantation to sample the potent pineapple liqueur it produces.
