Your itinerary
Waterloo Campaign - 4-Day Break
- Day 1 - We
arrive in the town of Wavre and stay for three nights. This
evening, there will be an overview lecture of the campaign
covering: Napoleon's overall strategy; preparation and diversionary
moves, the Allied fears and strategies; and a discussion of the
composition and quality of the armies.
- Day 2 - THE PRUSSIANS
DEFIANT (included). Making a brief stop at Fleurus, we
travel to Ligny where there will be a guided tour of the
Ligny-Sombreffe battlefield. In the afternoon, we travel to Quatre
Bras. This is a comparatively small battlefield and it can be
easily seen from one particular vantage point. Your guide will give
an overview of the terrain and explain what happened and where.
You'll then have an opportunity to explore the accessible parts of
the battlefield for yourself. In the evening, we return to Wavre
which was site of a battle for the town by a detached French Corps
under Marshal Grouchy following up the Prussian retreat after
Ligny. There are several points of interest for you to see whilst
out and about, especially the famous bridge, site of much assault
and counterattack. B
- Day 3 - WELLINGTON HOLDS
THE LINE (included) and BRUSSELS (optional). Travelling
along the old Brussels road from Quatre Bras, we follow the
rearguard Allied action at Quatre Bras. Near Mont St. Jean, we'll
undertake a tour of the Waterloo battlefield. We look at the
opening of the battle: Wellington's deployment; D'Erlon's attack;
Picton under pressure; Ponsonby's counterattack - and we follow the
line of Ponsonby's attack into the valley. We move on to Napoleon's
viewpoint at La Belle Alliance. We then consider The fight for the
Centre: walking the route of the Imperial Guard from Belle Alliance
to Wellington's centre, via the location of the major French
cavalry attacks. La Garde Recule: up the slope and breasting the
rise to where Wellington's final reserve awaited the final attack.
We have time to explore Wellington's centre-right, visit the local
attractions of the visitor centre or the panorama, climb the Lion
Mound, shop for souvenirs, take refreshments, or possibly visit
Hougoumont, which is within walking distance. We travel back to the
hotel, pausing briefly at Waterloo town to view the location of
Wellington's headquarters, and where he wrote his Waterloo
dispatch. We have the opportunity to visit Brussels by night
(optional), where you will have free time to explore this great
city. B
- Day 4 - Journey
to Calais then return home. B
