Your itinerary
Gallipoli - 8-Day Break
- Day 1 - We fly
to Istanbul where we are met and transferred to our hotel for an
overnight stay.
- Day 2 - GABATEPE and
HELLES MEMORIAL (included). We make an early start for
Gallipoli, a journey of just under five hours from Istanbul.
Following check-in at our hotel, where we will be staying for
four-nights, we start at the Gabatepe Information Centre and
Museum. Then, we visit the Helles Memorial to the Missing - where
the vast majority of those who fell in 1915 are commemorated.
B,D
- Day 3 - BRITISH LANDINGS
CAPE HELLES - KRITHIA (included). Our look at Gallipoli
begins by focusing on the landings of 25th April 1915. We start on
the British sector and see where the 'River Clyde' landed the men
of the 29th Division on V Beach, then visit Seddul Bair, the nearby
V Beach Cemetery and Turkish Gun Battery. We then move on to
Lancashire Landing, where the 1st Lancashire Fusiliers won 6 VCs
before breakfast. This visit requires some walking as the roads to
the beach are not accessible in a coach. At X Beach we see where
HMS Implacable landed the 2nd Royal Fusiliers. After a picnic lunch
we look at the ground fought over by the British in the second
phase of the campaign, seeing Krithia and the Vineyard, plus the
war museum in Krithia. B,D
- Day 4 - ANZAC BEACH -
LONE PINE (included). Continuing to look at the 25th April
landings, we move north to ANZAC Cove - where the Australians and
New Zealanders landed. We visit the beach and nearby cemeteries. We
then visit the battlefield at Lone Pine, the Lone Pine Memorial and
nearby preserved trenches and tunnels. We walk the ground where
Albert Jacka became the 1st Australian to win the VC in WW1. Then,
to the Nek, where the Australian Light Horse suffered heavily in
the August offensives, as graphically illustrated in the 1980s film
'Gallipoli'. Our day ends on the New Zealand battlefield at Chunuk
Bair, seeing preserved Turkish trenches and the Memorial.
B,D
- Day 5 - S BEACH - SUVLA
BAY (included). An opportunity to look at the often
forgotten French contribution and see the French Cemetery at Morto
Bay near S Beach. Travelling via Skew Bridge Cemetery, we go up to
Suvla Bay, seeing where some of the first British 'Pals' battalions
came into action in August 1915. Here we study the landings and
also look at the history of the 'Lost Battalion', the 1/5th
Norfolks: the men from the Sandringham Royal estate who disappeared
during the fighting at Suvla. B,D
- Day 6 - To
Istanbul for a two-night stay. B
- Day 7 - ISTANBUL
(included). With free time to explore this beautiful city,
why not relax in a café or maybe visit the Bazar? Or join
our city sightseeing tour (optional). In the afternoon, there will
be a chance to visit the Commonwealth War Cemetery in Istanbul,
where there are British graves from many wars, including the
Crimea, WW1 and WWII. B
- Day 8 - We
transfer to the airport for our return flight home. B
