- Day 6 - Ostia Antica and Frascati (optional) Join us on our visit to the fantastic Roman village of Ostia Antica. With the fall of Rome and the spread of malaria, this working port city was abandoned and eventually buried beneath mud and sand. Often such tides of time can prove cruel, but in this instance Ostia was remarkably well protected from both erosion and stone scavengers. Although Ostia is less celebrated than Pompeii, it is regarded by many to be superior in its remains of both the rich and poor sections of Roman society, and visitors are privileged to see some of the best-preserved Roman excavations in the world. In the afternoon we visit Frascati, with a chance to sample the region's famous wine B
