Your itinerary9-Day Break cruising the Danube
- Day
1 - To Belgium for an overnight stay.
- Day
2 - We arrive in Hellmonsödt in Upper Austria
and stay for six nights. B,D
- Day
3 - Linz, Postlingberg and Torchlit Walk
(included). We travel by coach to the city of Linz for a reception
at the town hall followed by a guided tour of the city highlights.
There is then free time to enjoy Linz, which is noted for its fine
churches and as a cultural centre. The Postlingberg is the second
steepest railway in the world. At an old fashioned pace of 7 miles
per hour, the line passes quaint idyllic little stations and
affords an excellent panoramic view of the city of Linz and the
distant Alps. At the top, we have time to visit the renowned
Baroque pilgrim church and view the interesting historic buildings
and architecture, before returning to our hotel for a musical
evening with traditional Austrian singing and dancing. We enjoy a
torchlit walk with a local guide through the historic town of
Hellmonsödt. B,D
- Day
4 - Vienna (included). We travel by coach to Vienna
for a full day visit. Our guided sightseeing tour (optional,
included on Silver Service) will introduce the principal sights of
the city, including the Hofburg Palace, the Parliament building,
the Opera House, National Theatre and the City Hall. We pass the
famous Prater Wheel, made famous by the film 'The Third Man',
before returning to the centre via the former imperial boulevard
known as the 'Ringstrasse'. B,D
- Day
5 - Cesky Krumlov (optional). Our day takes us by
coach into the Czech Republic to the medieval town of Cesky
Krumlov, one of the most beautiful towns of southern Bohemia with
narrow streets and imposing 13th century castle. The rich
Renaissance architecture still reflects the influence of the
nobility who moved to Cesky Krumlov in the 14th century, bringing
with them great affluence, commerce and culture. B,D
- Day
6 - Passau and Obermühl (included). We travel
by coach to Schlögen where we board the MFS Kaiserin Elisabeth
and begin our cruise upstream to the border town of Passau.
Considered to be one of the most spectacular settings in Germany,
Passau's magnificent St. Stephen's Cathedral is certainly worth a
visit, being home to the world's largest organ. We cruise
downstream to Obermühl, where we take in a brass band
festival, before rejoining our ship for a 4-course dinner, as we
cruise all the way to Linz, then back to our hotel by coach.
B,D
- Day
7 - Melk and Wachau (included). We start with a
cruise from Linz downstream towards the Abbey of Melk, one of the
most famous monastic houses of Austria. We sail along the most
scenic part of the Danube Valley through the beautiful
wine-producing region of the Wachau. We pause in the charming
gothic town of Grein for a sparkling reception and classical
concert at Greinburg Castle, once owned by Queen Victoria. We
continue by ship to Durnstein and the ruins of Kunringer Castle,
where Richard the Lionheart was reputedly held prisoner, enjoying
coffee and cake onboard, before returning by coach to our hotel for
dinner. B, D
