Your itinerary Map - Day 1 - London - Stratford - Coventry - York - Darlington Greetings from our Tour Director as we make our way through the Chiltern Hills to Stratford-upon-Avon, the birthplace of Shakespeare, with time to enjoy the old world atmosphere with its half-timbered buildings and pretty shops. From here we continue to Coventry where Lady Godiva is said to have ridden naked through the city! We see the ruins of the Cathedral, destroyed during World War 2 and the mighty edifice that was built opposite to replace it, by the architect Sir Basil Spence. Then we drive to Viking York to enjoy a walking tour of the city with our Tour Director. We will see the river Ouse, the Mansion House, the impressive city walls, Stonegate and Petergate, a myriad of medieval buildings and hear of the ghosts that haunt the city as we stroll through the picturesque Shambles. Finally we will see and have the chance to visit the amazing Minster - one of the greatest Cathedrals in Britain. Then we continue to nearby Darlington where tonight we will stay at a Country House style hotel and enjoy an included Welcome Dinner and drink with our travelling companions. (Welcome Dinner)
Hotel: Blackwell Grange
- Day 2 - Darlington - Hadrians's Wall - Edinburgh After breakfast we continue our northward journey to stop for photos at a section of Hadrian's Wall - built by the Roman Emperor to protect Roman England from the northern Barbarians, - and amazingly, still standing today! Then an exhilarating drive takes us through the Northumberland National Park to the Scottish border at Carter Bar where we will enjoy stunning views into the Scottish countryside. We cross the Borderlands and stop at the imposing ruins of Jedburgh Abbey before continuing into the beautiful city of Edinburgh, the Scottish capital. On arrival sightseeing with a local guide shows us all the most important parts of this city built on volcanic rock. We will drive along Princes Street bounded on one side by elegant shops and department stores and on the other dominated by the Crag and Tail on which Edinburgh Castle is built and the Princes Street Gardens. We will see the ancient Royal Mile, admire views of Holyrood House and the Devil's seat, visit the ironically named 'new town' with its beautiful Georgian architecture, see the new Scottish Parliament buildings and enjoy a guided visit of the apartments inside Edinburgh Castle. Tonight - why not enjoy some true Scottish entertainment with bagpipes and highland dancing?(Full Breakfast)
Hotel: Holiday Inn
- Day 3 - Edinburgh - Lake District - Chester Area (Runcorn) Today we drive through the Southern Uplands to the area known as the 'Devil's Beef Tub' to Gretna Green, where traditionally, young couples would run away from home and get married against their parents' wishes in a ceremony performed across the blacksmith's anvil - perfectly legal! We cross the border into England and drive along the lakes and valleys of the English Lake District to Grasmere, birthplace of the famous poet, William Wordsworth. Then along the shores of mighty Lake Windermere, England's largest lake, through pastures reminiscent of Wordsworth's magical poetry, we reach Liverpool. Here an orientation of the city of the Beatles, shows us the refurbished Docks, the river Mersey, the Liver building, and the old and modern Cathedrals. Tonight, we'll enjoy dinner in our hotel. (Full Breakfast / Dinner)
Hotel: Holiday Inn
- Day 4- Chester Area (Runcorn) - Wedgwood - London After breakfast, we drive into the centre of the medieval city of Chester, where a walk along the Roman walls will bring us into the heart of the city. Our walking tour will show us the main features of the city including the famous arcaded shops known as the 'Rows' and the Cathedral. Next, our journey takes us into Staffordshire - known as the 'Potteries - and to Barlaston to visit the world-famous Wedgwood Pottery Centre where we will see the art of porcelain manufacture. Time to pick up some bargains in fine china before returning to London - we have now given you a 'Taste of Britain' - and for sure, you will come back for more! (Full Breakfast)
